Kurt’s interest in Meggan (and hers in him) was probably due to bond more akin to kindred spirits than anything else.
Meggan was an innocent, naive to the ways of the world. She had only ever loved Brian, and no other man had even shown an interest in her. Originally rather ugly, her empathic powers made her shape herself the way others saw her. When Brian befriended her, she eventually managed to control her powers, settling on her far more attractive appearance, which reflected the soul that resided within.
But Brian had something of a nasty temper, often pushing her away in anger. She blamed herself. Kurt tried to convince her otherwise…
Ever the silver-tongued devil, there was little Kurt wouldn’t do in order to make her smile…
He couldn’t deny his attraction…and he agonised over it. Even though it was not entirely unrequited, his noble spirit wouldn’t allow him to steal another man’s lady…even if that man was boorish, negligent and perhaps unworthy of her…
And Meggan’s compassionate nature towards the still not fully healed Kurt didn’t help matters…
And though Brian may not have been the most considerate of lovers…he wasn’t stupid…
Especially when Meggan’s attentions towards Kurt seemed to become less innocent…
Perhaps it was because he was the first guy to show a genuine interest in her since Brian…or perhaps because he was everything she wished Brian could be…she was as drawn to him as he was to her…
Always the gentleman, Kurt never acted on his feelings…though his dreams betrayed him…
The shape-shifting Meggan was he fantasy…she could quite literally become the embodiment of his dreams…
And it was these dreams that eventually brought everything to a head. The ever-jealous Brian, perhaps sensing that Kurt could offer Meggan something he couldn’t, attacked his teammate, fearful that he would lose her to him. Though not as articulate in expressing his feelings, Brian truly loved her…and the thought of losing her almost drove him insane. It did lead to blows, the far stronger Brian eventually getting the upper hand on the agile Kurt…and breaking his leg…
He apologised, a little too late, for his explosive temper…and admitted the resentment he was beginning to feel towards Kurt…
Brian asked straight out about Kurt’s feelings towards Meggan, and Kurt finally admitted the truth…perhaps even to himself…
And with that confession, the tension between them was gone…Brian faced an Otherworld tribunal for his crimes against Kurt…they didn’t take kindly to him beating up on a resident of the land he was charged to protect…Meggan went off on a journey of self discovery, finally discovering her true form…and Kurt met an attractive alien Amazon named Cerise…
